Really rather badly.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ( phew )
$8500, which is rather cheap for these.
147,000 miles.
Atlas I5 connected to a 4-speed auto.
Extended cab, so I still have (barely) usable back seats, but a longer bed.
I'd probably take the side-steps off, solely because they look kinda weird on this truck. I could sell them to recoup a few bucks as well.
I feel sorry for anyone who has to ride in the back seats of this thing for more than a few minutes though, those back seats look absolutely terrible. Good thing then I hardly ever have more than two people in my car at a time.
Overall 10/10 would replace the Safari with.

I really approve Z71. But, No V8?

The V8 wasn't introduced until late into these truck's life cycles, which means they're still worth a good amount of cash.

CP. $8500 is way too damn much for a Chevy 147k. You can do much better than that for that price range.
Found in 5 mins on my local CL for $2000 and it has a vortec 350 and less miles
https://knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/4801098800…
I found a 4wd 1989 with a 350 for $1600 the other day but it was already sold and the add was taken down.

That's also older, RWD, and has rusted rocker panels.
I dunno about where you live, but here anything with less than 150k, 4WD, and isn't a shitty work truck goes for at least $8k in nice condition if it's semi-new.

Link me to your Craigslist and I'll help you look. Heres a really nice one.
The 350 is an infinitely better motor than the Atlas; way more parts availability. Starting in the mid 90s they had fully boxed frames and improved the rust proofing, but they still rusted because damp leaves rot out everything here.

My dad just bought a brand new 2014 silverado 1500 Z71 for 30k. I would never pay close to 1/3 of that for something with 150k. Just my 2 cents, seems way overpriced. You'll do a lot better buying from a private party. Dealer mark up on used cars is usually around $1000-$800. Just checked NADA value on this (average condition trade in) is $6100.

I want 4-wheel drive though. It snows enough here to justify it and I'm not buying winter tires. I drove the Safari in a snowstorm last year and it was the most stressful thing ever, and it has weight over its rear axle!

Lol, the Atlas has more power than the '89 and is close enough to the '98 that the gas mileage makes up for the rest. And dat sound.

Stressful? you're a funny one. Go to a Home Depot or something similar, they usually have tubes of sand 80lbs each. I have four in the back of my Silverado, works great. Then again I got by without them last year just fine, and it was a particularly snowy winter last year.

Not changing the fact that if I'm buying a truck it's going to be 4WD.

Do what you want, but seriously if budget is the biggest constraint you will most likely find a lower mileage RWD in that price range.

I knew this was your post, just by the picture. I quite like the first gen Colorado, I almost bought one instead of the Sierra.
Just curious, why do you eschew the idea of getting a RWD truck, and a set of snow tires? I don't even bother with sandbags in my truck, the snow tires alone make it excellent in the snow. You'd save thousands, both in initial price of the vehicle, and in repairs/maintenance. That's money you could spend on something stupid-fun, like an LT-1 Camaro, or a 9-C1 Caprice. Or you could just be less poor ... I suppose.
Not trying to dump on what you want, just curious.

If you go for the I-5, try to get the 3.7L, the 3.5 wasn't as good. I would hold out for a V8 though (did).
You're right about taking off the side steps, because they get in the way even for me and I am pretty short comparitively.
And don't let anyone talk you out of 4x4—I have the Crew cab/short box (better weight distribution than extended/reg.) and with snows on if I leave it in 2hi it's managable, but still not that good, except on clean snow. In 4hi it'll go anywhere.

The V8 is still worth a lot, but it also will hold it's value, because so few were made.

These trucks are good in the snow if you have snow tires, the key word being SNOW. As soon as it gets chewed up into slushy stuff, it doesn't like to go places until you put it in 4hi.

As stupid as this sounds, I'm under the mentality that trucks should be 4WD. Maybe it's because my dad's Silverado is 4WD and completely unstoppable when he has 4WD on, I dunno. I just can't fathom the idea of owning a RWD truck unless it's street-oriented. There's also the fact that my parents would never shell out for snow tires and I don't have the cash. I know RWD trucks are cheaper to buy, but then they also sell for less than comparable 4WD truck does.

I know the 3.5 wasn't as good as the 3.7, but both make more power than my current engine and move about the same amount of weight. V8s aren't even close to being in my price range.

> Logansteno: Bought a VW?

Well, you said it, the idea that all trucks should be 4WD is pretty stupid. Almost every truck was 2WD until well into the 70's, and they can do almost anything a 4WD truck can do. Sure, you can't plow snow, or go off-roading, but either of those will destroy your truck in short order, anyways. 2WD trucks do also resell for less, that is without a doubt true.
If you're too broke to buy tires, then I assume if you do get a truck, your parents will be buying it? If that's the case, I suppose you may as well go for a 4x4. But beware, as the maintenance and repairs necessary to keep an aging 4x4 working, is not cheap.
Especially on Colorado's. Did you know they have captured front brake rotors? That means you can only have the rotors turned, while they're still on the truck (not a DIY job), and the only way to replace the rotors, is to replace the whole hub and bearing assembly.

Owowowowouch. Paid 24,000 Loonies for mine, on the road with 63000kms. I saw them as low as 19k with over 100000km, I would have thought that they would be $12-14k with a stronger dollar and with the mileage you're looking at, but WOW.
